Backup Pricing Spinning Out of Control—Time for a Change

If you’re part of the IT industry—particularly if you influence backup and recovery decisions—you’ve no doubt noticed that although per GB pricing for these services has somewhat declined, the overall cost has nevertheless been steadily escalating.

A recent Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) survey found that two out of three IT managers and technical buyers felt at least “some pressure” to reduce IT spend. This pressure to contain costs increases based on annual revenue. Additionally, enterprise respondents (measured by revenue) were even more likely to say that they felt “strong pressure” to cut backup and recovery costs. In terms of future cost expectations, the survey found that financial buyers expect to see a “substantial increase” in backup and recovery costs over the next five years.

A big part of the cost problem is related to current pricing models for backup software. In the past, backup pricing methodologies were almost exclusively either 1) agent-based, billing on the number of machines protected, or 2) capacity-based, billing on capacity of data to protect.

In these old pricing models, companies with fast data growth rates (where the growth of data exceeds the percentage of data recovered over time) are at a big disadvantage. For these customer types, the price of backup software and services quickly escalates out of proportion to their actual needs, and becomes out of sync with the derived value (i.e. recovery).

The industry needs a new metric for pricing—one that’s performance-based and in alignment with cloud computing pay-per-use models. The good news is, we have one.  As an Asigra Hybrid Partner we are pleased to introduce the Asigra Recovery License Model® (RLM).

Using the Recovery License Model ensures that our customer is billed based on the volume of data actually recovered on an annual basis, not on the number of machines or capacity of data protected. This fairer business model allows users to pay based on the real business value they are getting…data recovery. With the Recover License Model the backup license cost is fixed and the recovery license cost is variable but never exceeds more than 25 percent of the total data volume recovered in a year.

This model is a fairer way to help tech buyers contain out-of-control backup costs and provide them with more predictability. With the new model, backup and recovery costs are separated and aligned with a recovery metric instead. If your company recovers less data, you will pay less. At OnDemand Recovery we’re excited to be part of this industry-changing solution—we now offer the Asigra Recovery License Model to all of our customers.
